What 12 Talented Artists Would Tell Their Younger Selves [PART 1]

At Picha, we always believe in the power of reflection. We start every Monday by reflecting on the week before, and we constantly ask ourselves what we’ve been doing right or what isn’t working. Recently, we’ve implemented a daily check-in process to reflect our progress at the end of each day.

Because just as John Dewey says “We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience.” — and we cannot agree more! Oftentimes when we reflect, we tend to learn much more about ourselves unexpectedly.

Which is why we started the campaign #ToMyYoungerSelf because we want to encourage all Picha Heroes to reflect by sending a message to their younger selves. Yes, we cannot go back in time but there are valuable pieces of wisdom & lessons we can all learn from this habit of reflection.

So we gathered some of the most talented artists across KL & Klang Valley to share with us what they wished they could tell their younger selves. If you’ve been following us on Instagram, you might’ve noticed some pretty food artworks —  and they all come from these 12 artists!

These are artists who had big, crazy dreams – which are unconventional by Malaysian standards. But they’ve taken the risks, conquered their fears and have become successful artists today!

Here are 12 pieces of advice to their younger selves:

#1: You can achieve anything, literally anything! – @ellamohamed_

To my younger self,

There are so many great stories that I wanted to share with you regarding us and our journey. I wished I could go back in time especially when we were 14, give you a big fat hug and told you that you are going to be fine. The 27 years old you are doing fine, although she’s not doing as great as her friends, but she began to embrace her flaws and work harder on the path that she believes she has been destined to be. Remember those voices telling lies about how you won’t be able to achieve anything in life? Oh dear they were totally wrong. Dear you, you can achieve anything, literally anything in life once you set your mind to it.

To my younger self, I am so proud of you, through the barren land, you still bloom. At a tender age of 14, depression took away your whole teenage life, you have no confidence in yourself, insecurities caused so much damaged as you alienated yourself from the people around you (who genuinely loves you) and the world, you disregard so much potential that lies inside of you. But dear, despite that, I am still proud of your journey, braving the life not all teenage girl could have ever tasted in their lifetime, you still make it out alive. You are alive, I’m a survivor of my own past, but I still wished that I could be that one person who could love you more and more even when all you could do was hating your entire existence.

To my younger self, I love you.

#2: You’re tougher than your toughest days – @moodoodles

Firstly, know that just because you stumble or fall, it doesn’t mean that you’ve failed – it just means that you’ve learned. And trust me.. You’ll fail more than you would expect. But remember! You’re tougher than your toughest days.

There will also be times where you’d feel lost in the exact place you should’ve had found acceptance, but your experience will be a testimony, because you will brave through it and grow in your capacity to love others.

On the days that you don’t feel quite like yourself, remember that your identity is not in what you feel or what you do. Find rest, be grateful in all things, and give weight to who He says you are – a daughter of the Most High King!

Lastly, know that you are loved. You are surrounded by friends and family who will always be a great support system, and you are blessed beyond measure. You are highly favoured, and there is something unique on your life that no one else would ever be able to take away!

#3: Be humble, grateful, stay grounded & most importantly – be kind – @wei.tieng

Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone may be the scariest thing ever and painful even, but the benefits are everlasting. Life is a journey, which means things will change (you will change), and people will disappoint you but that’s okay.

Do not be afraid of changes or failures. Every failure is a step closer to success, every tombstone is a stepping stone – you will grow better, stronger and indefinitely, wiser. Always remember to be humble, grateful, stay grounded and most importantly – be kind. When you smile, the world smiles with you.

#4: Make up your mind & do the best you can – @bea.eugenie

To my younger self, “YOU DON’T KNOW A DAMN THING! But to find out what is right, you need to make up your mind and do the best you can! You’ll never know but at least you’ll hit the target closer with every shot.

#5: Learn to say NO sometimes! – @felikioncanvas

Dear younger Feli,

Learn to say NO sometimes. Know your self-worth and never settle for less than what you deserve. Always remember this quote “If the person you love makes you question over and over again if you’re enough, only thing certain – they aren’t.”

Wait for happiness. I promise it exists and it will happen. It might not feel like that right now but hang in there. You’ll have to go through all the struggles before achieving it. Every experience, both good and bad will eventually get you to where you’re supposed to be. Every win, every loss and every mistake.

Everything will be ok. You’re stronger than you know. Trust yourself enough to let go, shift and uproot. Give yourself permission to shed the ugly. You are allowed to start over and find new ways to bloom into your best self.

Ps: Make more time for family. In the year 2017-2018 you will lose most of the people you hold dear. Regret is the greatest poison of life. Spread love, stay gold.

#6: Listen to your inner voice & follow your heart – @YKee.lee

#ToMyYoungerSelf As what Albert Einstein said, “Once you stop learning, you start dying”.

Believe yourself have unlimited potential. We can learn to be a better and stronger person. You know what you’re passionate about. Don’t be afraid of stepping out from comfort zone.

Learning through the process and enjoy it! You can achieve much more than you have thought. You will find yourself much happier. You will found freedom when you listen to your inner voice and follow your heart.

No matter how many discouraging words you’ve heard, there are so many people who love and support you, so follow your own step! Challenges allow you to grow, just don’t stop your step, you will accomplish your goal one day.

Aaaanddd that’s it for now! Part 2 will be out tomorrow, so stay tuned 🙂
